Ebook About
In her first work of contemporary women’s fiction, bestselling author Kay Bratt draws on her own life experiences to create a raw, yet inescapably warm, novel about friendship and a wary heart’s unexpected capacity to love.A hungry, stray dog is the last thing Cara Butter needs. Stranded in Georgia with only her backpack and a few dwindling dollars, she already has too much baggage. Like her twin sister, Hana, who has broken Cara’s heart one too many times. After a lifetime of family troubles, and bouncing from one foster home to another, Cara decides to leave it all behind and strike out alone—on foot.Cara sets off to Florida to see the home of her literary hero, Ernest Hemingway, accompanied only by Hemi, the stray dog who proves to be the perfect travel companion. But the harrowing trip takes unexpected turns as strangers become friends who make her question everything, and Cara finds that as the journey unfolds, so does her life—in ways she could never imagine.

Book Wish Me Home Review :

Cara Butter is on a journey (by foot) to Key West, FL to visit the home of Ernest Hemingway. Along the way, she picks up a stray dog, whom she names Hemingway after her favorite author. Since Cara was young she has had trust issues. As a child, Cara and her twin sister, Hanna, were tossed around from foster home to foster home. They learned at an early age to not depend on anyone but each other. Along the way Cara meets caring and helpful people who start to break down the wall she has built up around herself. They help her by giving her food, clothing, shelter, a warm shower, care for her dog, a bike with a trailer for Hemi to make the journey go faster and easier. Cara learns that people are not all bad.One of the things that I loved about this book was how Cara transformed before our eyes. She was weary of people and Hemingway too, initially in the book. As the book progressed and she continued on her journey, you could almost feel her relaxing and learning to trust. I loved the unconditional love that Cara and Hemingway had, the way they depended upon each other and protected each other. Cara became this strong, self-reliant, confident young woman who realized she has so much to give to others. I highly recommend you read this book and read Cara’s story for yourself.I would like to thank NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the advanced readers’ copy of WISH ME HOME by Kay Bratt.
Hard to put into words how I feel about this book.Loved the story idea; an interesting premise. A young woman in some mysterious kind of trouble is moving cross country on foot, with under $300 in her backpack. She is found by a stray dog and they become inseparable. What I liked: Interesting premise, and I love a story that includes a dog. Loved the people she met in the Georgia diner, the old man on the beach and everyone in Key West. Loved her home at Hadley House and the whole dog rescue scenario. What I didn’t like: Too much reverie. Every time the story got moving, she harkens back to her childhood in foster care. I don’t doubt the trials and tribulations of our inadequate foster care system, but to be honest it seemed like very page Cara was whining about her childhood situation. The book could have been as good with just a paragraph or two of her childhood situation. Do I doubt that a set of twins could have been treated so abominably in foster care, or that it would affect every day of their adult lives? No I do not, but do I want to read it for pleasure? No.Cara is damaged from her page gobbling childhood. She is hesitant, distrustful, and suspicious of everything. That got really old. I understand it given her childhood, but this is fiction and I could have done without all the constant angst.Cara trusts no one, but oddly enough except for one homeless man, and a few teens looking for trouble, everyone she meets takes her home and treats her like a queen. That’s a little hard to swallow-not that there aren’t kind people out there, but rather that there are people willing to take home a strange young woman and her dog, no questions asked.
